Covering an area of 2,052 hectares, this ecological reserve was officially established in 2003 with the goal of protecting an exceptional forest ecosystem, characterized by ancient trees, rare habitats, and rich biodiversity.

Forêt-la-Blanche is a true open-air laboratory and a prime destination for nature lovers. With its old-growth stands of hemlock and maple trees, some over 300 years old, it offers a unique glimpse into what natural forests looked like before the arrival of European settlers. This type of old-growth forest is extremely rare in Quebec, especially in regions so accessible to the public.

A Forest Ecosystem Worth Protecting

What makes Forêt-la-Blanche so precious is the richness of its biodiversity. Over 400 species of vascular plants, about a hundred species of fungi, and numerous mammals, amphibians, and birds can be found here. Some species are rare or vulnerable, such as the cerulean warbler, Back’s sedge, and Virginia false gromwell. Protecting these natural environments is essential to ensure the survival of these species and to maintain the ecological balance of the Outaouais region.

Accessible Trails to Explore Nature

The Forêt-la-Blanche Ecological Reserve is one of the few reserves in Quebec that allows public access. More than 12 kilometers of well-maintained trails let visitors explore the forest on foot, with snowshoes, or on cross-country skis, depending on the season. These educational trails are lined with interpretive panels that inform visitors about the ecosystem, the species found there, and key conservation issues.

Les Amis de la Forêt-la-Blanche: A Mission of Conservation and Education

Behind the preservation and promotion of this site is a non-profit organization: Les Amis de la Forêt-la-BlancheFounded in 1998, this group of dedicated citizens has made it their mission to raise public awareness of the importance of old-growth forests and to promote environmental education.

Les Amis de la Forêt-la-Blanche manage the interpretation center and offer educational activities for schools, community groups, and the general public. Their educational programs, aligned with the goals of the Quebec Ministry of Education, allow youth of all ages to discover nature in a hands-on, immersive, and enriching way.

Thanks to their dedicated work, the forest has been protected for the long term and remains today a place for discovery, research, and relaxation—open to anyone wishing to reconnect with nature.

Plan Your Visit

The reserve is open year-round, with hours that vary by season. In the summer, it is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the rest of the year. Entry fees apply, with options for day passes or annual memberships.
